Global CO2 emissions continue to rise

A latest study by the US "Earth Policy Institute" shows that worldwide CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are accelerating rapidly. Emissions grew 3.1% a year between 2000 and 2006, more than twice the rate of growth during the 1990s!

On 16 February 2005 the Kyoto Protocol entered into force. Three years after we are now at the beginning of the first compliance period (2008-2012): there are now 4 years, 10 months and 14 days left for the EU-15 to meet its target of a -8% reduction compared to the 1990 emissions.

Eu governments want full freedom on how to use money from carbon permit auctions

One week ahead of the next ECOFIN meeting, the Council's economic policy committee says in a report that governments should have exclusive sovereignty over the money from carbon permit auctions. The European commission demands that at least 20% of the revenues have to be ring-fenced in the fight against climate change.

Australia ratifies the Kyoto Protocol - hope for a breakthrough on international climate negotiations in Bali

The biggest-ever climate change conference was opened today in Bali, Indonesia. The target of this 2 weeks conference will be to launch negotiations toward a pact to carry on the Kyoto Protocol when it expires at the end of 2012, and set an agenda for the talks and a deadline. On the 8 December the Greens will launch a dedicated website on Bali.

The European Environment Agency today unveiled the report 'Climate change and water adaptation issues'. It says that existing adaptive measures in Europe aren't sufficient and are often only directed at reducing vulnerability to current climate variability. The EU Environment Ministers discussed on how to take forward measures to combat climate change agreed at the UN conference in Montreal last December. They had to decide post-2012 commitments by developed nations which have ratified the Kyoto Protocol.
