To set a worldwide sustainable energy economy and to avoid dangerous effects of climate change:
The Greens work to force clear and decisive decisions to:
- Transform the global energy system away from one dependent on fossil fuels to one that is based on new renewables, energy efficiency and energy conservation;
- Withdraw completely from old fashioned energy sources, like oil and coal by 2050;
- Implement an EU-wide eco-tax on fossil fuels with a yearly increase of 7 % in the real cost of motor fuels;
- Introduce an EU-wide eco-tax on flying.
EU Member States and Parliament push for quick adoption of sustainability criteria for agrofuels
The representatives of EU governments agreed last week that the binding agrofuel sustainability criteria should be included in the revised version of the EU's 1998 Fuel Quality Directive. It would ensure that those standards are in place early to prevent the production of unsustainable and dirty agrofuels.

G8 leaders didn't commit to limit mean temperature rises to 2° C
The G8 deal is clearly not enough to prevent dangerous climate change as it was only agreed to "consider seriously the decisions made by the European Union, Canada and Japan which include at least a halving of global emissions by 2050". But the G8 agreed that the process should take place within the U.N. framework, starting in Bali in December.
China unveils a national climate change plan
Two days before the start of a G8 summit which will be very much focused on climate change, China unveiled its first national plan on climate change. It stresses that China won't sacrifice economic ambitions to international demands to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

New pipeline to bring Russian oil to Mediterranean
On 15 March Russia, Greece and Bulgaria concluded a deal on the construction of an oil pipeline that links the Bulgarian port of Burgas and the Greek port of Alexandroupolis. While localised environmental problems along the pipeline are expected, the project might also get EU public fundings. To tackle climate change the EU supports dirty energy!

Capture and store carbon? Not in my backyard, I guess ? Get some background about this technology and our assessment
For power production or for heating, coal energy is still on the top of list. To save the climate we need to leave it out.
Sweden and Iceland have already announced to get out of the oil age. Shouldn't we all proceed in the same path ? What does it mean and how can we find concretely the way out ?
Our civilization is dependent on fossil energies producing massive amounts of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Neither safe, nor clean, there's no future for coal and oil!

The threat of a gas war between EU and Russia is pure populism
MEP Claude Turmes throws light on the background of the current crisis unveiling some wrong assumptions of the debate. The gas crisis is not new, but 15 years old. And it is surely not a crisis of the EU, as Russia is probably itself dependent on the income from European gas sales. (pdf)
