Climate change and biodiversity

Public hearing by the Greens/EFA to take place the 14 May in the European Parliament

Ahead of the 9th meeting (COP9) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Bonn, Germany, (19 to 30 May), the Greens/EFA will organise a high-level hearing on "climate change and biodiversity". Experts of the UN, NGOs or the European Commission will debate on how to tackle the loss of biodiversity in the context of global warming.

Each day municipalities make decisions which will protect, or not, our climate. Switch to green power, investments in eco-buildings or insulation of older buildings, development of local soft mobility schemes: local actors can make key contributions in tackling climate change!

Four years after EU enlargement and almost 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, rail connections to eastern Europe are still in a bad state. Today it takes 60 hours to travel by train from Berlin to Tallinn while in 1935 it only took 27 hours!

Agrofuel target

Scientific body of European Environment Agency asks to suspend 10% agrofuels target

The EEA scientific committee made public an opinion on the environmental impact of agrofuel use in Europe. It recommends a new, comprehensive study on the subject and a suspension of the 10% taget of agrofuels in transport by 2020.

Carbon emissions

Global CO2 emissions continue to rise

A latest study by the US "Earth Policy Institute" shows that worldwide CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are accelerating rapidly. Emissions grew 3.1% a year between 2000 and 2006, more than twice the rate of growth during the 1990s!

Climate Package

European Parliament's committees start discussions on the files of the Commission's "Climate Package"

Today and tomorrow the committees for Environment on one hand and for Energy on the other hand start the talks of the MEPs on the Commission's proposals. The new directives on renewables, the Emission Trading Scheme or Carbon Capture and Storage will be among the heated debates.

Schedule of our climate campaign's conferences, hearings, actions...

Several events will be organised in the coming months in the frame of the Greens/EFA climate campaign. Among them a hearing on biodiversity and climate change, a conference on the topic of "climate refugees" and anoter one dealing with tourism and climate change.
