Situation in Georgia

Greens/EFA motion for a resolution

The Greens/EFA take the view that there can be no military solution to the conflicts in the Caucasus and criticise strongly, in that connection, the attack by Georgian forces on the Tskhinvali region and strongly condemns the disproportinate Russian military response. They also reaffirm their support for the independence and the territorial integrity of Georgia and calls on the Russian authorities to fully respect the sovereignty of that country.

A Greens/EFA campaign on Olympic Games in China

Human rights must not be forgotten during the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer. With their campaign, the Greens/EFA want to address ways in which to raise the profile of the issue during and in the run-up to the Games. Whether by boycott of the opening ceremony or by other means, the Greens/EFA group believe respect for human rights must be at the forefront of EU policy towards China.

Returns directive

Greens condemn inhumane law on repatriating irregular migrants

The European Parliament has voted in favour of a so-called "compromise solution" that allows immigrants, even children, to be held for up to 18 months. It also imposes a blanket five year re-entry ban that will separate families. The Greens condemn this shameful directive and call for a humane, balanced migration policy.

Irish No to Lisbon treaty

Black Friday for Europe

The Irish No has once again demonstrated that national referenda are not an adequate instrument to decide European questions. The ratification process should go on and at the end we should take stock. EU member states will have to decide if they want to go for a more integrated Europe or if they opt to be members of little more than a free trade area.

Alarm bells ringing, information still lacking

The considerable media attention of the nuclear alarm across Europe has highlighted public awareness for the major risks posed by nuclear energy. All parties are clearly more afraid than they admit. Food prices and agrofuels

Greens call for moratorium on agrofuels

The Greens also call for a moratorium on the use of crops as an energy source. The boom in production of inefficient agrofuels at a time of rising food prices worldwide is creating competition between food and energy production. To counter this, Greens support biomass as an energy source, based on efficient use of residues and waste

Trans European Networks of Transport

Trans European Networks of Transport (TEN-T)

Overall presentation of the different projects and space for debate at European level

Although some good projects have materialised in the past, the big problem of the TEN-T program is its slow progress especially in rail projects. A major lack of financing is one of the main problems of the network. If European transport policy is to seriously contribute in the fight against climate change it is crucial to reconsider the trans-European network as well as transport policy under the premise of economical, social and environmental sustainability and climate change.

Health check of the CAP reform

The cure needs adjustment

It is time for the agricultural policy to correspond to the needs of society: agriculture contributes to the creation of jobs, the economic development of regions, the maintenance of cultural landscapes rich in biodiversity, food security and stopping climate change. In order to further promote these aims, the CAP needs serious changes. (pdf)

One priority of the Greens/EFA 'Food Culture' campaign is to highlight the dangers of the current expansion in plant fuels.
