Greens/EFA motion for a resolution

The Greens/EFA Group calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria and State Governments in Nigeria to abolish the death penalty and, pending abolition, to declare an immediate moratorium on all executions as provided by UN General Assembly resolution 62/149 and commute without delay all death sentences to terms of imprisonment.

The Greens/EFA Group is profoundly saddened over the recent execution of several juvenile offenders in Iran, making Iran the only country in the world where this grave violation of international standards of law is still practiced; Strongly condemns the persecution and imprisonment of Iranian citizens in Iran who engage in the defence of human rights and who campaign against the death penalty.

The Greens/EFA Group reiterates its longstanding position against the death penalty in all cases and under all circumstances; insists on the fact that, in the case of Troy Davis, the evidence presented is not clear and compelling and leaves room for reasonable doubt; urges therefore the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles to commute his death sentence.

The Greens/EFA Group reminds the EU Presidency and Members States that the main political content of the resolution must be the adoption of a world-wide moratorium as a crucial step towards the abolition of death penalty; Reiterates its full support for the EU institutions and Members States to declare, together with the Council of Europe, a European Day against the Death Penalty on 10 October each year.
